Recently, during my almost 3 week stay-cation [stay at home vacation], I had a film night and rented the Power Rangers (2017) film. I didn’t get around to seeing it at the cinema. Mostly as I knew deep inside it would probably be rather average. It really was! Not like, ‘pull your eyelashes out Twilight saga’ average. Just the usual run-of-the mill ‘scrolling through Twitter on your phone during most of the movie’ kinda average.

Having been a massive childhood fan of the original TV series - that’s right, I’m talking about The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, you guys - I decided to endure through this CGI-fest and hunt for those nuggets of awesome, hidden, almost out of sight.

Generally speaking the film was well casted but suffered from a weak script, strange art direction and really problematic pacing. It actually almost felt like two different movies, spliced together and really missed out one vital thing: it just didn’t feel like a Power Rangers film, at all! That being said, from a wider perspective, it still was rather fun.

What though, if any, life lessons can be learnt from the new Power Rangers movie?

Well, after our newbie Power Rangers receive their powers and prove themselves through unconvincing training montages, Zordon says this fantastic statement about the Rangers’ new found responsibility:

“Never use your power for personal gain. Never escalate a battle unless an enemy forces you. Always keep your identity a secret, no one may know that you are a Power Ranger.” — Zordon

So let’s break this down.

That’s right, we’re about to learn life lessons via a wise galactic sage.

“Never use your power for personal gain...”

What’s Your Motivation?

Having worked within commercial media sphere and also having had the delightful experience of working within corporate PR for a hot minute, I can say that personal motivations will always be telling.

In life, there’s two types of driven people:

  1. Those that strive to be their best.

  2. Those that strive to be their best - at any cost.

Yes, be someone who strives to be their best! Look for exciting challenges, adventures and truly stretch yourself! If you’re not challenged in your professional or personal life and find yourself thinking, ‘can I actually do this?’ on a regular basis: you are living in your comfort zone and are coasting!

That being said, there’s being motivated and then there’s being brutally ambitious.

I’ve been fortunate to work with some truly wonderful people throughout my career and blessed to learn from the best (I’m looking at you GMG Radio/Real and Smooth Radio Ltd.).

Elsewhere throughout my career, I’ve witnessed first-hand the negative impact that individuals can have when their ambitions completely override their sense of humanity. It’s unnecessary and it’s unacceptable.

One skill that’s vital is the ability to be objective about your career and your motivations. Sometimes it’s necessary to take a step back and ask yourself, ‘what’s my motivation again?’.

So, if you’re gonna be a real Power Ranger, you’re going to have to be a team player.

“...Never escalate a battle unless an enemy forces you...”

What Would Liz Lemon Do?

Liz Lemon from 30 Rock is one of my favourite fictional characters. Tina Fey and co. penned her with such finesse and managed to create a truly relateable character, who often manages to ever so aptly sum up the human experience.

That’s right. Sometimes you don’t actually need to outwardly display an opinion - in person, or online. Not even in 140 characters or even 280 characters! Who’d have thought it, eh?!

So from time to time, think to yourself, ‘what would Liz Lemon do?’ and then, don’t engage.

“...you are a Power Ranger.”

Be a Positive Force, For the Greater Good.

Part of the charm of the Power Rangers is that they’re just everyday kids who are given amazing powers. Vitally though, they’re given these powers as they’ve proven themselves to be of good character.

Perhaps instead of the saying, “with great power comes great responsibility”, it should be “those proven of good character get great responsibilities and power”.

Yes, I hear you. Even in the original TV show there was Tommy the evil green ranger. But guess what? Even he defected to become a good guy and traded in his totally lame Dragonzord for the White Tigerzord and was even given a cool talking sword. I digress…

It’s Morphin’ Time!

For better or for worse - whether we like it or not - we’re all part of the same system and in this madness together. So let’s act like it! Let’s take some responsibility for our actions both online and in the real world! Let’s set an example for the younger generations by campaigning for social justice and change. Let’s be future focused and ready for a challenge! Let’s help promote an environmentally friendly and sustainable future and help make this planet a better place for all.

After all, we’re stronger and more powerful when we’re united and working as a team.
